2007 Staete Landt particularly appealed to both Hooke and me, although we saw the wine differently. "I liked this a lot", he said. "Very intense and attractive, with gooseberry, capsicum and nettles. A touch of sweetness, but doesn't rely on it. Balance and great drinkability." I found riper flavours of lychee and tropical fruits, plus citrus overtones. It's quite rich, with good weight and texture, and excellent length.
Ripely scented, rich and zingy, this single vineyard wine is grown at Rapaura and mostly handled in tanks, with some fermentation and lees-aging in seasoned French oak casks (15 % in 2006). The 2006 vintage (5 stars) is a sophisticated wine, weighty and ripe, with sweet fruit characters of passionfruit and lime to the fore. Aromatic and intensely flavoured, it's a complex and immaculate wine with a fine thread of acidity and a long, fully dry finish.

Old Ebbits Grill Oyster Competition, Washington DC
An unmistakeably Marlborough sauvignon blanc that blossoms after 12 months in the bottle and will last for even longer. Creamy, slightly nutty character behind the rich and weighty tropical fruit results from a portion of the blend being tweaked with oak.
Staete Landt 2006 Sauvignon Blanc
Intensely perfumed and richly concentrated, this is in a class of its own. Gooseberry and pungent herbaceaous aromas segue scintillating flavours of zesty ripe citrus, white peach and ginger-infused lime. It's crisp and fully textured with a lengthy finish that's mouth-watering and lip smacking good. A treat sipped on its own, it certainly has the balance, depth and oomph to pair with food. Try breaded calamari rings or pan-seared scallops.
'If you're looking for a wine to keep the heat at bay this summer, this is your proverbial fire extinguisher. Bright notes of tropical fruits dominate the nose and palate, where flavors of citrus get company from hints of dried grass on the crisp, refreshing finish. Chill the wine, grill the shrimp.'
'Wildly fragrant, with a bold burst of passion fruit, grapefruit, gooseberry and lime skin flavours. Grassy notes and vibrant citrus acidity pulse through the finish. Drink now. 6000 cases made.' - D.S
Drinking superbly now, the 2005 vintage is weighty, concentrated and rounded with dry, very ripe, passionfruit, lime and pineapple flavours, acquiring real complexity and richness with bottle age.

Staete Landt Estate Grown Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2005
A tight wine, minerally with some very nice quite intense and concentrated fruit melding together with other components. Patience will reward well.
Staete Landt Estate Grown Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2005
Concentrated wine in a fairly austere style with some mineral and funky yeast lees characters that add complexity and interest. A bone-dry, food friendly wine that will need time to express its full potential.
Staete Landt 2004 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc
This bone-dry wine has achieved good weight an flavour intensity. It offers an impressive mix of ripe passionfruit, red capsicum, lemongrass and some tree-fruit flavours, plus an exquisite backbone of acidity. Good drinking now or in the next 4 years
Staete Landt 2004 Sauvignon Blanc The 2004 vintage in New Zealand was a variable one, but some excellent sauvignons have appeared recently. Staete Landt is one of the most lush, with a sumptious nose of tropical fruits and a suggestion of leesy complexity. In the mouth there's good texture with plenty of ripe flavour and an aromatic finish.

Staete Landt 2004 Sauvignon Blanc, $23 Intensely-flavoured wine with an impressive mix of ripe passionfruit, red capsicum, lemon grass and some tree fruit flavours. Vibrant fruit with an exquisite backbone of acidity. 93 points
Staete Landt Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2004
Nicely tight and concentrated Sauvignon, very much demonstrative of the low-cropping intensity of which this variety is capable. A style which will develop and open further as 2005 passes; bold and strong enough to be proud of. $25.00
Staete Landt 2004 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, $22
A good, fleshy, full-flavoured single-vineyard sauvignon blanc from a winery that demands more attention than it's had in the past. Shows how lightly massaging a portion of the wine with elderly oak can work wonders with the texture. Deliciously tangy.
Staete Landt 2004 Sauvignon Blanc
Ripely centred, fleshy, passionfruit flavoured wine with impressive depth and a slightly creamy texture. Good mouthfeel and a long tangy finish.

2002 Sauvignon Blanc, Staete Landt
Staete Landt was the original name given to New Zealand by Abel Tasman. This is the most reserved of the trio, with a fabulous fruit flavour which slowly unfurls on the tongue. Sophistication in a glass!
2002 Staete Landt Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc
Enticing fine, intense gooseberry aromas with excellent structure, depth of flavour and crispness. A long-flavoured, racy Sauvignon Blanc with an appealing steeliness to it. ($21.50)
2002 Staete Landt Sauvignon Blanc
Another exciting newcomer from Marlborough, this smells vibrantly of lime leaves and lemon zest, with an almost luscious sweet-fruit taste that fills the mouth and concludes with sherbet-like acidity. It is no shrinking voilet, and seems to have plenty of alcohol, as well. Bulleid was worried about free sulphur in the wine, and Stock saw powerful flinty flavours balanced by acid and alcohol.
Staete Landt Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc
The ripely scented, rich and zingy 2002 vintage was grown in a single Rapaura Road Vineyard, 10 per cent barrel-fermented and one-third lees-aged. Full bodied and tight, with sweet fruit delights, it's a dry wine with a delicious array of gooseberry, passionfruit and lime flavours and a fresh, crisp, lingering finish. DRY $23AV
Staete Landt 2001 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc
Staete Landt is a relatively new Marlborough winery with a strong quality focus. This very concentrated and complex wine has strong stone fruit/nectarine/ peach and tropical fruit notes that contrast with greener pea pod and gooseberry flavours.
Staete Landt 2000 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc
The intense and complex bouquet puts the accent on ripe/tropical fruit with some gooseberry counterpoints, the nicely balanced and structured palate ripe, but not aggressive. Subtle oak adds positively to the texture of the wine, without obscuring the lush varietal character.
Staete Landt 2000 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc
Crisp, zingy and remarkably focused, this shows lots of green apples, lime and papaya aromas and flavors; balances between sweet flavors with lively acidity on the long finish. Debut vintage for the U.S. Drink now. Harvey Steiman
