Staete Landt 2006 Marlborough Pinot Noir
Very nice; well textured, plenty of fruit, a generous, balanced wine opening up perfectly after almost three years. A serious winemaker statement perhaps, reflecting the site perfectly. As much as five years good drinking ahead, yet accessible now.

Very ripe style, warm, savoury and supple. Ruby hued, with fresh, sweet-fruit flavours of cherries, plums and spices, showing good complexity. Drink now onwards.
Very ripe year. Sweet with some earthy complexity developing alongside the bright fruit. Some savoury notes and good acidity. Very focused with a bit of evolution; a nice wine.

"Recently I was floored by the incredible style and elegance of Staete Landt 2005 Pinot Noir from New Zealand. A Pinot Noir fanatic will tell you there is a certain magic in a proper Pinot that is just not in other wines. This magic is rare and elusive, but boy is it special when it is there! Staete Landt Pinot expresses this magic; I can retail the wine for around $ 25; so I am cautiously ecstatic. For me this wine is pretty close to the Holy Grail, a great affordable Pinot."

'A light but elegant expression of this varietal, this wine features pretty scents of lavender and raspberries on the nose. Malolactic fermentation lends a plush platform for the ripe cherry and dark strawberry flavors to play on a lingering finish to enjoy. Serve it slightly chilled with roasted chicken.'
'Graceful and fragrant, with a lovely array of raspberry, spice, strawberry and dried herb flavours. Savory mineral and crushed stone accents, cedary oak and a supple structure harmonize in the deft, lingering finish. Drink now through 2010. 1600 cases made.'-DS
‘This single-vineyard red is consistently enjoyable – fragrant, mouthfilling, generous and supple. The very refined 2005 vintage, hand picked and French Oak aged for 14 months, is the most successful yet. Deep coloured and beautifully scented, rich and supple, it’s a fleshy wine with concentrated cherry/plum flavours, good acidity, ripe tannins and lovely depth and harmony.’
Fresh and focused with nice bright herb and cherry fruit backed up by spice and minerals. Very fresh and showing some evolution. Good acidity.
Immediately feel warm and plush, with a fresh fruit note calling out of its depths and a bright air of intensity. Mid palate maintains the plush feel while building warmth and spread, with a glow of intensity at its heart and some lovely tannins holding the finish together. Very sophisticated, stylish wine, always with an air of elegance.
****˝ (out of 5): "Sweet plums and smoky notes blow off the nose of this medium-bodied beauty. Expect to be treated to a mélange of fruit flavours in the strawberry, raspberry range. By its nature, Pinot Noir has acidity, but with such powerful fruit characteristics, you barely notice its presence here." (Vic Harradine — WineCurrent.com — June 2006

In the graceful mould of Volnay or Santenay, the debut 2001 vintage is a seductive, silky-smooth middleweight. Grown at Rapaura, low-cropped (five tonnes/hectare) and matured for 15 months in French oak barriques (30 per cent new), it is fullish in colour, with sweet-fruit charms, ripe cherry and red berry flavours, good complexity and velvety tannins. Staete Landt Pinot Noir 2001
A first for the company, previous vintages 'not good enough for our featured variety'! It is indeed very nice, a low yield of less than four tonnes per hectare has given some delightful intensity and there is a lot more to open up with some time. The couple of 'lost' vintages have probably helped also. Looks to be amoungst Marlborough's best.
In a word: Low yeild, high standards, delightful intensity, surely one of Marlborough's best. $40
