Staete Landt 2008 Estate Grown Marlborough Viognier

4 stars

Estate-grown at Rapaura, the 2008 vintage was hand harvested at 25.6 brix, fermented in seasoned French oak puncheons, and then lees-aged for 9 month in tanks, prior to bottling. It's a full-bodied, dryish wine (6.3 grams/litre of residual sugar), sweet-fruited and finely textured, with good weight and concentrated, peachy, slightly spicy and buttery flavours. Drink now onwards.

Staete Landt 2007 Marlborough Viognier

A fascinating wine, surprisingly elegant for this variety and coming with a high drinkability rating. Good spine, generous fruit and an outstanding Marlborough statement which must show things ahead for viognier. Ready as an aperitif, with antipasto and with seared fish fillets.

Staete Landt 2007 Marlborough Viognier

Only 20 cases made. A dry and quite complex wine that is more in the style of Condrieu than any NZ Viognier tasted to date. It is dry and quite complex with a haunting floral/exotic fruit perfume plus a solid influence of yeast lees and spicy oak. Very impressive.
