Dutch natives Ruud Maasdam and Dorien Vermaas planted their 52-acre vineyard in northern Marlborough in 1997 and 1998. The vineyard contains 25 blocks, with annual production at about 12,000 cases. Quality improved noticeably with the 2005 vintage, and Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir have been consistent winners. Maasdam has a deft hand with oak; fermentation in about 15 percent neutral barrels gives the Sauvignon added freshness, and the Chardonnay nicely integrates one quarter new French oak. The Pinot Noir has been lithe, aromatic and ripe, demonstrating Marlborough's potential with this challenging variety.
