Our four main varietals are Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris. They were all carefully mapped across the differing soil types in parcels, with plantings in both dominant soil types. Apart from our four ‘main’ varieties we grow smaller quantities of some other wines: for instance we produce a Syrah and a Viognier. Beautiful wines not normally associated with Marlborough. We tend to call them our “Geek” wines – they stand out from the crowd in every way. The same with our two styles of Riesling – which tend to raise eyebrows – in the best possible way. These vines are planted in the middle of the vineyard, the hottest possible spots for the Viognier and Syrah, a bit more to the side for the Riesling.
They are varieties that require a lot of nurturing and TLC, which results in an inordinate amount of work in the vineyard. But wait until you taste them, you’ll understand why we don’t complain about walking that extra mile!
