Varieties

Our four main varietals are Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris. They were all carefully mapped across the differing soil types in parcels, with plantings in both dominant soil types. Because we keep each parcel separate, it allows us the ultimate flavour components at blending time.

Sauvignon Blanc

Sauvignon Blanc

19 acres – 6 parcels

Our clay soils provide the eventual wine with deep herbaceous flavours, whereas the stony soils provide more of a tropical and floral edge... || more details

Sauvignon Blanc

The Staete Landt Sauvignon Blanc is planted in 6 different blocks on the vineyard, all on the east side where we find the stony, gravelly soils produce intense flavours. By varying rootstock (Schwartzmann, 101-14 and Riparia Gloire) we implemented a further focus on our terroir. There are 6 distinctively different Sauvignon Blancs coming off the blocks, ideal components for creating a complex style of Sauvignon Blanc wine with many layers of flavours.

Chardonnay

Chardonnay

6 acres – 5 parcels

The crisp flavours of our Chardonnay come from the clonal differences as well as the variety in soil types... || more details

Chardonnay

The Chardonnay blocks are spread over clay-ish and stonier soils. The two main clones used are Clone 95 (Meursault) and Clone 15. The latter one being well known for the “Hen-and-chicken-effect” in the berries after fruitset has taken place. What this means is there is a range of berry sizes within the bunch,  smaller and larger. This creates even greater intensity in flavours.

Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir

17 acres – 18 parcels

The Pinot grown on clay soils provides the fruit with floral and fragrant characteristics, while the fruit from the warmer stonier soils provide grainier tannins and darker flavours... || more details

Pinot Noir

Most of our Pinot Noir blocks can be found on the west side of the vineyard, where we found deep layers of silt and clay. Pinot Noir vines require even moisture, so this area of the vineyard is perfect for them.

We used Dijon clones from Burgundy for the various blocks, including:

  • Clone 5 (back bone of the wine), Clone 114, Clone 115 and Clone 777.

Again we grafted these clones on various combinations of rootstock:

  • Schwartzmann, 101-14, 3309 and Riparia Gloire.

The differences in structure, flavour, colour, aromatics and tannins are enormous. Hence our ability to produce intense, complex, fragrant yet feminine Pinot Noir.

Pinot Gris

Pinot Gris

3 acres – 4 parcels

Our Pinot Gris is spread over the clay and stoney soil. With a maximum production of 500 cases this variety is pre-allocated before it gets bottled..|| more details

Pinot Gris

Again quite a variation in the clones of the Pinot Gris: clone 2-15, LBM and Ovaille, planted on 101-14 and Schwartzmann rootstock.
Pinot Gris has a tendency for over cropping and we have to crop thin and bunch thin sometimes 2 – 3 times per growing season! It’s worth the extra effort if you look at the end result though.

Other varieties

Apart from our four ‘main’ varieties we grow smaller quantities of some other wines: for instance we produce a Syrah and a Viognier. Beautiful wines not normally associated with Marlborough. We tend to call them our “Geek” wines – they stand out from the crowd in every way. The same with our two styles of Riesling – which tend to raise eyebrows – in the best possible way. These vines are planted in the middle of the vineyard, the hottest possible spots for the Viognier and Syrah, a bit more to the side for the Riesling.

They are varieties that require a lot of nurturing and TLC, which results in an inordinate amount of work in the vineyard. But wait until you taste them, you’ll understand why we don’t complain about walking that extra mile!
